The 2nd Annual Gastown Blues & Chili Festival – Aka I lost my keys, and MVS saved the day.

My weekend…

So I’m sitting in the lobby of my building, waiting for a cab on Friday night.  I called the cab at 6:10 to make sure that I’d make my dinner arrangements on time — at 6:45.  I waited for about 20 minutes and decided that I’d call them again.  They told me I missed the cab, that it came 5 minutes ago — which I thought was impossible since I was sitting in the lobby the entire time, but whatever.  So I went outside, waited for my cab, and 5 minutes later, he was there.  Let me tell you, this guy had one foot on the gas, and one foot on the break the entire time… and I thought I was going to throw up by the time I got to the restaurant.

So I sat down at my favorite restaurant Memphis Blues with my DOP Jay, and we had a talk about all the things we wanted to do with the show, how we wanted to shoot it and all that jazz.  I also devoured a plate of pulled pork and chicken, it was amaaazing.  I could eat there every day I kid you not, but… for my weight, it’s probably not the best idea haha.

OMG….just look at that BBQ Sauce on the Pulled Pork—-amaaaazing.

So anyhow, I took another cab home since it was now late (and I hate the bus).  First off, the guy pulls over about two blocks away from where I live and says “Can I drop you off here?” I was kinda shocked and I said yeah whatever. He replied with a “oh well *the address* is just right over there…” I said “yes…I’m aware of where I live.” paid the fare, and got out of the car.  Angry with the guy, but got over it.

It was around this time that I realized I didn’t have my keys…

Where the hell were my keys?! There were 3 possible places.

1. the first cab.

2. the restaurant.

3. the second cab.

So my first thought, CALL MIKE. He has a set of keys to my place.  Phone is off.  Panic sets in.  Second phone call, phone is definitely off.  Panic grows.

This is about when I bumped in to my friend Carolyn, who had just returned from a movie or a play, to be honest, I really have no idea.  I was too busy thinking about how I was going to have to sleep in the lobby of my building and that someone was robbing my apartment, that I completely lost track of the conversation, but I’m pretty sure I managed to squeeze in a Space Squid comment haha.

So as I said goodbye to Carolyn, Mike answered his phone! I started jumping around.  He laughed at me for my ridiculousness, and as I walked up to the building, I saw a note saying “A set of keys was found in the lobby this afternoon, if you can tell me what’s on them, I’ll bring em to you.  Call *********”. So I’m thinking.. these must be my keys.. and I’m feeling pretty relieved, I call the guy, no answer… Panic sets in yet again. So Mike offers to come down and let me in.  He got there about 20 minutes later and I called the guy back and after confirming my “If You Wanna Be My Lover — Spice Girls” and Rhinestone heart keychains (he burst out laughing upon hearing me say them) we agreed to meet the next morning.

Procrastinator that I am, I ended up working on my final project and napping all day, so I never got around to meeting the guy.  I made plans to meet with him today at 12.  Now, being the insanely punctual person that I am… I also needed to make sure I was there right at 12.  I sent a txt at 11, and without getting a response, I foolishly went and sat in the lobby waiting for him at 11:58.  I waited and waited.  I called.  No answer.  Panic sets in yet again.

Being the paranoid freak that I am, I started conjuring up all sorts of scenarios where he used my FOB to get to my floor, found my unlocked apartment, and creeped into my apartment and robbed me (of my macbook and toy story toys :O) while I’m sitting there waiting in the lobby.  I txted Mike and who only sent my paranoia into over drive, he called and suggested he come over and let me in.  I called Carrie to calm me down, and thankfully, she’s not nearly as crazy as Mike and I, so 2 minutes later I was feeling much, much better.

Finally at 12:45 the guy txts and called me to say he just woke up and that he was on his way down.  So in the end, as usual…. I freaked myself out for nothing.

So since he’d already left Burnaby, when Mike arrived we decided to go check out the Gastown Blues & Chili Festival, and I was not disappointed! mmmmm mmm mmm.

For $15 I got 10 tickets for 10 different chili samples.

The winner by far for me was : The Blarney Stone.  It was lotsa different kinds of beans mixed together with corn, ground beef, peppers, tomatoes, and onions.  It was topped with sour cream, cheese and green onions.  Completely delicious.  I’m gonna have to head over there for a bowl of their chili soon!

The most interesting mix for me was : The Greedy Pig.  They had a green lentils and duck chili.  I loved the texture of the lentils.  Having never had duck before, I was a bit concerned I wasn’t going to like it, but I really did.  I don’t really know what to compare it to, but I’m wanting to try some BBQ duck now..

Mike polishing off the Greedy Pig chili — while smoking a cigarette.  Classy guy.

The taste of Edmonton : The Black Frog.  This bar is an “Edmonton” bar, adorned with Oilers memorabilia, and in my own little home of gastown.  They had a chili topped with a few chocolate shavings.  Mmmm.

I found that most of the chilis there had a lottt of meat in them and not enough beans, but I don’t think I tried enough of them! Too much food in one little belly.  On the upside they had lots of different kinds of meat from the classic ground beef to turkey, and even some tofu!  (Carrie!)

All and all, the music was great, the food was delicious, and I went back for a second helping of the oh-so-delicious Blarney Stone chili. mmmmmmm.

So the moral of the story… Don’t freak out Patsy… and eat some chili.

Catch ya’ll later!
