When it came to picking what to get as a tattoo it was a no-brainer. As a kid she’d send me out to pick saskatoon berries from the yard in this big orange bowl — bear in mind that saskatoons are about half the size of blueberries. It would take me up to an hour sometimes, granted that I was probably imagining myself as a princess dancing around in a field of saskatoons and that hindered my picking. And when I was done she’d send me to the Superette to visit Mr. Ostemayer and pick up a box of Nutriwhip so that she could make us dessert — I mostly remember walking down the hot, freshly tarred roads in Joussard without sandals and quickly regretting it. As I got older I started taking out the kids in my family to pick saskatoons for my kokum, and after she passed it’s something I’ve continued to do with my cousin Kyleigh and I hope it’s something we’ll continue to do for decades to come.
